Taking down a leaning live oak over a garage on Elm Street
A big live oak on Elm Street in Oak Hollow had started leaning over the homeowner's garage. We took it down in sections with our crane, and the garage came through with no damage. The homeowner plans to plant a new tree in the spring.
Why a tree leaning over a building needs a careful plan
A tree that leans over a house or garage can't simply be cut at the base and dropped, because its weight is already hanging over the roof. The safe way is to take it apart from the top down, controlling every piece so nothing lands on the building.
How we took it down
We used our crane and removed the oak in sections. With a crane, each section is held as it's cut and then lowered to the ground, instead of falling. That's how the garage underneath stayed untouched.
The result
The tree is gone and the garage has no damage. The homeowner is planning to plant a new tree in the spring.
Is a tree leaning toward your house?
Many trees grow with a slight lean and stay healthy for years. These are signs to have someone take a look:
- The lean is new, or it's getting worse
- The soil is cracked or lifting on the side away from the lean
- Roots are exposed or broken at the base
- The tree leans over a house, garage, driveway or power lines
